Monash University

The Environmental and Public Health Microbiology Laboratory is led by Associate Professor David McCarthy, and includes a group of 17 PhD students, two post-doctoral researchers and two research assistants.

The EPHM Lab’s research is focused around the microbiology of water systems in urban and rural environments and in particular the interactions that these systems have with human health.

In particular, the EPHM Lab researchers focus on the following topics:

  • microbial dynamics in urban water systems, development of green infrastructure systems (green roofs, green walls, etc.),
  • monitoring of water systems,
  • microbial and chemical risk assessment,
  • development of new materials for water purification (electrochemical and photochemical oxidation), urban agriculture and real time control systems.
